Victory Day, 8 September: The Grand Harbour Regatta

Victory Day is a national public holiday marking three historic milestones rolled into one date: the end of the Great Siege of 1565, the end of French occupation in 1800, and the end of the WWII siege in 1943. The centrepiece is the Grand Harbour regatta, a traditional rowing race between crews from Cospicua, Kalkara, Marsa, Marsamxett, Senglea, Vittoriosa and Birżebbuġa, racing wooden boats (dgħajjes, kajjikki, frejgatini) over eleven races split by category. It’s a genuinely local occasion, with rivalries between the harbour towns that go back generations.

The best free vantage points are elevated: Valletta’s Upper Barrakka Gardens and the Saluting Battery on one side of the harbour, or the Three Cities waterfront on the other. From Sliema, the Sliema–Valletta ferry crosses Marsamxett Harbour in under fifteen minutes, then it’s a short walk up into Valletta for the gardens. One thing to flag: because it’s a public holiday, the ferry and bus services switch to a reduced Sunday schedule, so build in extra time if you’re heading over for the morning.

Independence Day, 21 September

Two weeks later, Independence Day marks Malta’s independence from British rule in 1964. Valletta hosts official flag-raising and parade events during the day, with a quieter, more festive mood settling over the city by evening. The Sea Is Still at Its Warmest
